Part-Time positions available for the 2017-2018 After school MusicWorks! program-Percussion Teaching Artist

Program Overview:

MusicWorks! is an El Sistema-inspired after-school program that promotes positive social change through music, and empowers underserved youth to develop a strong sense of personal identity and community through musical literacy. The 2017-2018 MusicWorks! program begins August 10 and ends May 30, 2018.  The after-school program runs Monday-Friday from 3-5:30PM* at The Heights Center.  The Percussion Teaching Artist position is for 2-3 days per week from 4-5:30PM.    *Hours and days may be adjusted to fit individual’s schedule.

General Expectations

  • Embrace a flexible working schedule and environment to deliver a reactive program that is constantly evolving to meet the needs of the children and greater community.
  • Be creative in designing and introducing new ways of learning as part of the music program.
  • Submit weekly lessons plans to the Site Coordinator for each class assigned.
  • Co-create curriculum and repertoire for ensembles, sectionals and individual children.
  • Work in collaboration with local community partners to identify and develop targeted programs and outreach work related to the music program.
  • Work with outside consultants, musicians, and organizations to enhance the development of the program.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of systems and procedures for monitoring and evaluating the music program and individual children.
  • Cooperate with and support any recording, filming, and documenting of the program.
  • Work collaboratively with the Site Coordinator and fellow Teaching Artists to ensure a safe, fun, and positive learning experience for all students.
  • Undertake ongoing training that may cover music, music pedagogy and learning styles, child development, child protection, working with challenging behavior, shadowing of different roles within the community including teachers, social workers, community workers, etc.


  • Teach/Co-Teach, including but not limited to: ‪‪
    • Percussion Group lessons; instruments to include Snare drum, Timpani, and Auxiliary Percussion
    • Lead Percussion Ensemble Rehearsals
    • Teach general percussion/rhythm classes for all MusicWorks! students
  • Participate in mandatory professional development at the discretion of the Site Coordinator. Additional, optional professional development sessions may be offered.
  • Hold students to high artistic standards, cultivating students’ individual and ensemble skills through appropriate warmups, technical exercises, games, and diverse repertoire.
  • Prepare and lead students at selected concerts and events.
  • Work to develop social skills in students.
  • Develop students’ music reading skills and basic music theory knowledge.
  • Submit weekly lesson plans under the guidelines provided within the MusicWorks! Curriculum guide.
  • Cover classes, when necessary, as directed by the Site Coordinator.
  • Communicate with students’ family members and/or guardians as directed.
  • Supervise students on all breaks and during any non-teaching time.
  • Take attendance under the guidelines provided by the Site Coordinator.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Site Coordinator, not requiring materially different skills or competencies.


  • Bachelor’s degree required in either music education and/or performance, Master’s degree preferred with strong musical knowledge.  Candidates currently completing a Bachelor’s in Music Education or Performance will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Experience teaching beginning brass instruments, especially in a mixed group setting.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong knowledge of elementary brass pedagogy and repertoire.
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities and populations and work cooperatively in a small open workplace environment.
  • Ability to work under frequent observation by Site Coordinator and site visitors.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus, but not required.
