In this fascinating presentation, Rachel explores the musical world of North America before the founding of the United States, offering insights into the early traditions, influences, and stories that helped shape music in the New World. Through a blend of historical perspective and live musical examples, she brings the past to life in an approachable and engaging way. 

Music in North America until 1787 is a comprehensive analysis of the musical traditions of North America.  Beginning with the earliest accounts of Native American music by European explorers, the presentation addresses music of colonial Spain, then moves to music in the English-speaking colonies, the cultural influences that accompanied enslaved Africans, and concludes with the importance of music in the colonies and in the colonial armies.

Rachel Cox is an accomplished violist who has performed with ensembles including the Naples Philharmonic, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, with appearances at venues such as Carnegie Hall. In addition to her performing career, she is also a published author and historian whose books on Ohio and U.S. history are used in schools and libraries across the country.
