Symphony Masterworks at the MACC: Haydn & Mozart Nov. 14
October 9, 2026
Gulf Coast Symphony presents Masterworks at the MACC: Haydn & Mozart, on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., at the Music & Arts Community Center in Fort Myers.
“This season is particularly special to me,” said Dr. Andrew Kurtz, Gulf Coast Symphony founder and music director. “In 2027, we mark the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death, but rather than simply presenting a cycle of his symphonies, I wanted to explore something broader, including the composers who influenced Beethoven, and the generations of composers he inspired.”
“I’ve always thought of Beethoven as the father of the modern symphony,” Kurtz said, “But before Beethoven, there were Haydn and Mozart. Their music helped lay the foundation for everything that followed, so, we begin our season on Nov. 14 with three wonderful symphonies, one by Haydn and two by Mozart.”
Haydn: Symphony No. 103, “Drumroll” – One of Haydn’s last and greatest symphonies, written during his years in London, it opens with a dramatic timpani roll that gives the work its nickname.
Mozart: Symphony No. 36, “Linz” – This one has a personal connection for the Gulf Coast Symphony, Kurtz explained. “During our Danube river cruise this past summer, we visited Linz, Austria. As I walked through the city, I thought about Mozart and the beautiful symphony he composed there in just a few days.”
Mozart: Symphony No. 40 in G minor – One of only two symphonies Mozart wrote in a minor key, it is filled with urgency, passion, and extraordinary beauty. Audiences will recognize its opening from the film Amadeus, and Kurtz calls it one of his favorite Mozart symphonies.
Together, Kurtz said, these three works make for a wonderful opening to the 2026-27 Gulf Coast Symphony Masterworks season, and set the stage for the Symphony’s exploration of Beethoven’s remarkable musical legacy throughout the season.
